FAQs
About Psychotherapy
What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy involves developing a safe environment and trusting relationship with a therapist so you can work together with the overall aim of improving your mental health and well-being. Sessions can be individual, couples, families, or groups. Together you will work with your therapist to make positive changes in your mood, thinking, relationships, and behaviours.
Are there different types of Psychotherapy?
There are many types of Psychotherapy. While all of them help you achieve the changes you desire, there are variations in the approaches, ranging from therapies that focus on thoughts and behaviours and provide you weekly tasks, to therapies that may focus on helping you understand and explore your history and emotions. There are also specific types of therapies depending on your symptoms and goals (e.g., trauma focused approaches). Please click here for a detailed list of our therapies. What is most important is that you and your therapist collaboratively develop a working relationship and plan together.
How many sessions will I need?
The length of treatment varies from one person to another and will depend on your goals and history. In your first sessions, you and your therapist will begin these discussions and have an idea of what the treatment length may be. Research suggests that the majority of individuals will remain in therapy for approximately 12-20 sessions to achieve their goals. Some may need less sessions, especially if the therapy is for a specific shorter-term problem, while others may need more sessions if they have multiple conditions or are looking to understand and make changes to life-long patterns.
Can I do my session online?

About Neurofeedback
What is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is direct training of the electrical activity (EEG) function in our brains. Your EEG data is recorded and observed by your clinician, and this information is then provided to you via computer feedback. Using this EEG feedback, your brain can create changes in arousal patterns, neural pathways and networks, thus improving overall self-regulation and symptoms (e.g., attention, mood, anxiety).
How does Neurofeedback work?
The brain is incredibly adaptable and capable of learning. It can be trained to improve its own performance as well as overcome often debilitating conditions by providing the brain with cues for what to do and how to change. Each session makes information available to you (and your brain) about how it is functioning and asks it to make adjustments – which it does do. When you come to your first session, you will sit comfortably on a chair. EEG sensors will be placed on your scalp and will record your brain activity. Each different type of Neurofeedback can have a slightly different process, but the majority of them involve having the brain data observed and filtered back to you through a computer interface. You will be asked to try to ‘control’ a game or task on the computer. Although this can sometimes seem impossible at first, your brain’s incredible neuroplasticity will allow it to figure out how to make the recommended changes. As this occurs, you will see this feedback in the computer task.
Are there different types of Neurofeedback?
Toronto Neurofeedback and Psychotherapy Centre offers multiples types of Neurofeedback treatments, including Traditional Neurofeedback (Single-Channel Training), LoRETA Z-Score Training, High Performance Neurofeedback (HPN) and Audio-Visual Entrainment. Each of these treatments have slight variations in how they work to allow your brain to make changes.
Please click here for more information on each.
How long does it take to get results?
The number of treatment sessions ranges depending on the treatment chosen, but in general you will begin noticing changes within the first 3-4 weeks. A total treatment course typically ranges from 20 to 60 sessions over 4 to 8 months.
What if I live too far away?
We offer virtual psychotherapy and we also neurofeedback intensives where you can get your treatment completed on a condensed schedule! Reach out to the clinic for more info.
What if I want more intensive treatment in less time?
We do offer intensive treatments, which can be very effective for neurofeedback. Neurofeedback requires a certain amount (hours) of treatment for your brain to learn a new pattern, but also maintain that pattern in the long term. For those that want results quicker or for those that live further from the GTW, we offer intensive treatment programs where you can condense your treatment into weeks to months. The exact treatment regime and schedule depends on your assessment results and is customized for each person. Reach out to our clinic for more info.
Can I do my session online?
Neurofeedback Treatments can only be provided in person at our clinic. Although there are other forms of ‘Neurofeedback’ advertised as at-home remedies, the in-clinic treatment that is customized to you based on your brain data and symptoms shows the highest efficacy.
What do I wear to my first appointment?
You can wear your usual clothing. However after a qeeg brain map your scalp and hair on the top of your hear may get gel in it and be a little bit wet.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are minimal and depend on the type of Neurofeedback being provided. With traditional and LoRETA Neurofeedback, the side effects are very rare. However, like any training program (e.g., learning a new sport), initially there can be some ‘soreness’. In terms of the brain, this is most often feeling fatigued after sessions due to the mental energy needed to train each session, which often goes away after the first few sessions. Our HPN and AVE systems provide a form of feedback to the brain through very small audio visual or cranial stimulation. Although the signal is very slight, on occasion clients can notice a slight over stimulation after the session (e.g., slight headache, fatigue).
When does Neurofeedback not work for someone?
While we’ve seen great success with Neurofeedback, the fact remains that just like with any form of treatment, Neurofeedback may not work for everyone. A small percentage of people (approximately 5%) won’t respond to the training while a majority will. We use the initial assessment to ascertain whether you are indeed a good candidate for Neurofeedback.
Are treatments covered under my insurance?
Our services are not covered by OHIP. However, they are covered by most employee benefit plans under psychological services. Please note that we do not offer direct billing.
